And we all know that.
- [Audience] Public health is the science of healthy communities.
- You betcha.
And by encouraging a healthy lifestyle, researching diseases, and promoting injury prevention, public health experts protect us all.
Today's contestants are: [audience applauding] Connor, Olivia, and Lily.
Welcome, everyone.
And to our special expert, please introduce yourself and give us our first hint.
Which of the five foundational building blocks of public health do you work in?
- My name is Ms.
Andrea and my work supports the access to and linkage to care pillar of public health.
[audience applauding] - We're glad you're here.
Olivia, you get the first question.
- What does access to care mean?
- Access to care means being able to and knowing how to find a healthcare provider in your neighborhood.
Some areas in North Carolina have a lot of dentists, but other areas don't have very many.
So I help fix that.
- How do you fix it?
[playful mysterious music] - I'm on the case.
[Garin laughing] - I travel to the area with few dentists and help provide screenings on peoples' teeth to be sure they are healthy and strong.
I also teach people about what foods are good and bad for their teeth.
Sometimes there are people who need help brushing their teeth, and I teach them that too.
- Oh, you care for teeth.
Are you a dentist?
- I found her.
A real-life dentist.
- Being a dentist is part of my job, you're right, but I also write requests for money to help educate people on dental health and to help create programs to keep our teeth healthy.
I also help people find dental care, teach them why it's important, and train them to care for their teeth.
Do you guys know how you can take care of your teeth?
- Eat healthy foods to help your teeth be strong.
- Brush your teeth after you eat to clean them.
- Leave toothpaste on your teeth overnight to help protect them.
- Wow, you guys are teeth experts.
Your mouth is connected to the rest of your body, so if you want a healthy body, you need healthy teeth.
[chimes ringing] [bell ringing] - It's time [audience applauding] to guess the public health hero.
Contestants, write down your answers.
Can you guess what Ms.
Andrea does here for her public health job?
[timer ticking] [tense music] [bell ringing] [audience applauding] That is correct.
Ms.
Andrea, tell us what a grant administrator and public health dentist does.
- As a grants administrator and public health dentist, I provide guidance on improving dental health in communities.
I ask the government and companies for money to help create dental education programs.
I use those programs to train healthcare providers on the best ways possible to help people take care of their teeth and mouths.
I also collect data on the dental health of all people in our state and share it with the public.
I help keep our communities safe and healthy by making sure that families are informed on the importance of dental health and that they are able to access quality dental care.
[audience applauding] - [laughing] And that's our show, folks.
See ya next time on "Health Heroes," and remember, for a healthy body, you need healthy teeth.
[laughing] [audience continues applauding] [light music]
