The game show where you guess what our special guest does for their public health job.
And we all know that-- - [Audience] Public health is the science of healthy communities.
- All right!
And by encouraging a healthy lifestyle, researching diseases, and promoting injury prevention public health experts protect us all.
Today's contestants are-- [audience applauding] Connor!
And Olivia.
And Lily.
Welcome everyone, and to our expert, please introduce yourself and give us our very first hint.
Which of the five foundational building blocks of public health do you work in?
- My name is Mr.
Jon, and my work supports the environmental public health pillar of public health.
- Welcome.
Okay, Olivia, you get the first question.
- The word environment makes me think of outdoors.
So do you work outside?
My favorite days are when I get to work outside, but I also work inside sometimes too.
I do a lot of work outdoors to keep you protected when you are indoors.
- When you are outside, do you play in the dirt?
- I do get to play in the dirt a lot.
- Wait just a minute, you get to play in the dirt?
Oh, I'm getting my shovel.
- I spend a lot of time digging holes, evaluating the soil and making sure that wastewater can be treated as it moves through the soil so that nothing bad can enter our groundwater.
- What do you do to the water and soil after you collect it?
- I test the soil using soil science to be sure that it can treat our wastewater.
Sometimes there's things like harmful bacteria or chemicals that can get into our water through the ground, and part of my job is making sure that those things stay out.
[curious music] - I am so ready to collect my dirt samples now.
- Sure, but I think this will be more helpful.
- That is awesome.
[curious music continues] - It's pretty cool, right?
[bell dinging] - It's time to guess That public health hero.
Contestants, write down your answers.
Can you guess what Mr.
Jon does for his public health job?
[curious music] [bells dinging] That is correct!
[audience applauding] Now, Mr.
Jon, tell us what an environmental health specialist actually does.
- An environmental health specialist is someone who protects people by ensuring the common places in our environment, such as restaurants, school buildings, daycares, and even swimming pools are safe.
Environmental Health has three branches in North Carolina.
Those include food protection and facilities, children's environmental health, and onsite water protection, which helps protect our water supplies and ensures that harmful bacteria and sewage are not present on the ground or in your backyards.
By evaluating soil and protecting our water supplies, we can help keep humans, plants, and animals safe.
[cat meows] Environmental health specialists are protecting you and the environment every day by making sure that the water you drink, the places you eat, and the schools you attend are safe.
[audience applauding] - Now that's our show, folks.
See you next time on Health Heroes.
I hope you're not too sad that it's H2O-ver.
[upbeat music] [audience applauding] Oh, I'm not funny.
Hey, are we gonna go get-- [upbeat music continues] [audience applause continues]
