Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipCynthia: I am super excited.
I know I say that all the time, but I'm super excited.
But this truly gets my heart pounding.
I'm standing in the Nibble Garden at the Youth Garden Project here in Moab, Utah, and it is incredible.
Oh, can I steal that cherry tomato?
Abby: Yeah.
Cynthia: Oh, that's so good.
This is where anybody can come and enjoy fresh produce.
They can take a taste, they can take a sample, they can take a whole basket full and enjoy what the Nibble Garden has to offer.
We are so excited to meet with the caretaker and give us a little taste of what this Nibble Garden is all about.
So, Abby, this is incredible what you guys have.
Give us a clue of what the Nibble Garden actually is.
Abby:The Nibble Garden is our space where people can come and harvest for free.
So, it's whatever people need whatever what's available at any time of day.
Anyone who walks by can just come in and pick what they want.
(birds squawking) - Now, while we're here, I've seen a bunch of bikers, a bunch of passerbyers, a bunch of gawkers of all the beautiful garden veg that you guys have available.
Abby: Yeah, it's right along a community pathway.
It's pretty like heavily trafficked.
Anyone can come by and access healthy, locally-grown produce.
Cynthia: Obviously, there's a big overall goal that you guys want to have.
- Which is for people to access free locally-grown fresh produce.
- [Cynthia] Awesome.
- And then I would like the space to be like self-sufficient a little bit more.
I want more people to know about it.
I want people to be engaged and feel some ownership in this space, but it would be great to be able to collect seeds from these plants and plant them again.
- One thing I love, Abby, about what you have here are these really cool signs.
Give us a little bit more.
It's not just a sign saying, "Here's some kale."
- Yeah.
- Tell me more about your signage.
- Yeah, so our signs help people identify the plant, but also, how to pick, when to pick, and then what to do with it once they grabbed it.
Cynthia: So cool, so it's like full education.
I've even seen some recipes on there.
- Yeah, there's some ideas what to do.
We just don't want anyone to come into this space and not feel welcome or not be sure how to use it.
So, we wanna have all the information right there.
- For sure.
Especially, when people are new into a garden, it can be really intimidating and not knowing what to do.
- Yeah.
- So, that's awesome what you guys provide.
Tell us about how you got involved with this Nibble Garden project.
- I studied food systems and nutrition and health in Seattle and so, I really wanted to find a project that I could work on where I would get into like a local food system and really be able to make a difference.
- So, gardening wasn't per se part of your past, but now is.
- Yes.
- Part of your future?
- It is, yeah, I really enjoyed working here and really getting a lot of like hands-on experience with the plants and with the food.
Yeah, it's been great.
- Well, Abby, thank you so much.
This honestly is such an amazing project that you have going.
So much fun to see people walking by looking at the sign.
I'm curious, if anybody out there has a nibble garden that's like this.
So, if you do, make sure to comment below.
