You know, making things is a great way for others to feel good and it makes us feel good too.
So, while I make Miss Shana a new necklace let's meet some artists from Asheboro, North Carolina who also like making things, our friends at RhinoLeap.
[rattling] - Hello, my name is John Bowhers.
I'm a freelance theater designer.
I designed the Letter Size Little Theater, which is a print-at-home toy theater kit that can be built by children and adults alike.
Now right now, I'm here in the historic Sunset Theatre in downtown Asheboro.
And today we're going to build our own home theater out of just a few household materials including a shoe box, some masking tape, construction paper, and some bamboo skewers.
To begin, we're going to cut a proscenium, or picture window out of our shoe box.
And there we have our proscenium opening.
This is going to be how we see our characters on the stage of our theater.
As you'll notice, we've got a big opening on the top of the theater and that allows us to perform with our puppet characters from above.
To do that with our shoe box we're going to cut out this whole side of the shoe box so that we can put our puppets in from above.
Next, we're going to draw our characters.
I'm gonna start by drawing a dragon.
Our second character is going to be a snail.
Next, we're going to cut out our characters and this step does involve scissors, again.
So be sure to grab an adult for help with this step.
Now that we've gotten our characters drawn and cut out it's time to tape on their rods.
So now we've got our rods taped to the back of our puppets and it's time to test them out in our shoe box theater.
Now remember, we cut the hole in the top of our shoe box so that we can hold our puppets in the theater from above.
And now we've got our characters in our theater and it's time to put on a play.
As you're beginning to work with your puppet characters, it's a good idea to see how they move.
You can try dancing with your puppets, jumping, running, anything active that gets your puppet characters moving.
Once you've gotten a chance to play with your characters and see how they move now's the time to create a story.
You can think about a story that you might be able to tell what the characters you've created.
You can write it down, memorize it, and perform it for friends and family.
- Wasn't that just great?

And one of them can be found right here in North Carolina.
It's called the Eastern Box Turtle.
It can be found in every county in our state.
You may have one living right outside your home.

The box turtle gets its name from the way it hides using the bottom part of its shell.
The turtle can use it to make a nice box for it to hide in, pulling its legs and head in to protect itself when it gets scared.

One way that we can be kind to the Eastern Box Turtle is to make sure that we let them live right where they are.

While I see if I can get the turtles to stop blowing bubbles why don't you meet our friend from Asheboro, North Carolina, Miss Becky.
[lively music] - Hey friends, I'm Miss Becky with the Randolph County Public Library in Asheboro.
Recently, I've been making videos in my home that share creative ideas that you and your family can make together while you have to stick around at home.
Wintertime can seem sort of dark sometimes.
And that's because the sun shines less and the nights seem longer.
It can also seem dark when it's cold out or when hard things are happening.
Not too long ago, I heard a great quote by a famous activist named miss Ella Baker.
She said, "Give light and the people will find the way."
I love the idea of giving light to people, so I wanted to share some fun lantern ideas with you that you can make at home with your family.
Okay, the first lantern idea that I'm going to show you is really easy and fun.
You just need an empty jar and you just take the label off of it.
And then I've just got some tissue paper here and I've got some water down glue and you just have to brush it on.
And I like the irregular shapes that the torn pieces make.
It kind of looks a little bit like stained glass, ta-da.
And then this one, I put wire around the top and some beads that I had on the wire to make a handle.
And then inside, you can put these little candles at the dollar store that are just sort of electric and they work great.
Another way to create a lantern is to use a lunch bag and you just cut out the top corners of the bag and then cut out windows on each side of the bag 'til you have something that sort of looks like this.
And then you can use the two long strips to make a handle on the top, just tape it together.
And then you can take your wax paper designs or some tissue paper, and just glue them to the inside of the window like this.
On this one I ended up writing, share the light, with markers.
Maybe you can come up with your own inspiring message.
Did you notice that all of these lantern ideas have handles on them?
That's so if you want, you can be sneaky and give light to others by hanging a lantern on your neighbor's door knob.
Of course, the best way to give light to others, even if you don't make a lantern, is by showing kindness to them.
I had so much fun being a part of this block party.

So you want to make sure to have your surface have flour all over it, and your hands like Lila has right here.
So you want to get your dough out and put it up on your surface.
- A really good strategy to use is press, roll, and turn.
And you're just going to do that over and over and over.
- Let me try it, press.
- Like I said before, you want to flour your hands so you don't have a really sticky mess like this.
- Oh no, how am I going to get this off?
- One thing about making your own pizza is you can make it however you want.
It doesn't have to be the normal square or circle.
You can make it look like an animal or a tree or something that might be your favorite thing as well, so now-.
- Let's add our sauce.
- Yeah.
Some people like a bit of a more saucy pizza.
Some people don't like as much sauce.
So now we're going to add our cheese.
- Here we have two types of cheese.
Can you guess what cheese these are?
- Yeah.
It's mozzarella and cheddar.
And now we're going to add it onto our pizza.
So an important thing about a grater is that one of its sides is actually sharp and you can hurt your fingers.
So make sure you want to be very, very careful with that.
Doesn't that look so good?
This is fresh cheese.
- That looks great.
- Hey guys, how's it going?
- [Lila] Hi mom.
- They're making me a pizza, but kindness is all about sharing so I'm happy to share with you this pizza that they made for me.
- Wow.
Thank you, that's so kind.
- A pizza is no good unless it's cooked.
So make sure you have an adult with you to put that pizza straight into the oven.
- [Fred] Here we go.
- The pizza is finally ready and it smells so delicious.
- Are you ready to try this pizza out with us?
Awesome!
- The pizza's ready?
All right.
Can't wait to try it.
- It smells delicious, guys.
- I think it's time to take a bite.
But before we do that, make sure you think about kindness and I'm so glad to try this pizza out with all of you.
- Thank you.
You made it for me, but kindness is all about sharing with others, so we can all share a slice.
- Here, take one.
Okay.
Three, two, one.
- [Everyone] Mmm.
- That is good.
- So good.
- This is so good.
And I can't wait for you guys to try out more recipes with us in the future, so thanks.
- Whew, back to normal.

Now it's time to see what our friend Daniel Tiger is doing.
Remember, King Friday, sent Daniel to Baker Aker to get a muffin.
But Daniel gave the muffin to his friend O because O felt sad.
Daniel then went to Music Man Stan and got a pair of cymbals.
But he gave the cymbals to his friend, Miss Elaina, because she felt sad.
Now we're going to see what happens when Daniel goes back to see King Friday.
Are you ready to see what happens?
- [Children] Yes.
Great.
Then let's watch more of Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood.
- [Child] Let's watch.
- Well, King Daniel, are you ready to go to the castle?
- I guess.
- Hm, why don't you sound happy, Daniel?
- I don't have any of the things that King Friday asked me to get.
I guess I didn't do my job as king.
- Welcome King Daniel.
Did you bring everything I asked for?
- No King Friday, I don't have anything.
I guess I didn't do a good job as king.
Well, Daniel, what I heard was that you did do a wonderful job as king.
- I did?
- You did.
- But how?
I don't have anything you asked for.
- Daniel, being king is about helping others and being kind.

Now let's explore what we just saw.
Why do you think King Friday wasn't upset that Daniel gave away the muffin and the cymbals?
Good answers.
I think King Friday was happy that Daniel was kind to his friends, O and Miss Elaina, because being kind is very important.
In fact, I wrote a song about being kind and Miss Shana is going to help me share it with you.
