Luke McCann has massive plans for this old worn out storage building in Red Bank this site here is obviously old and underdeveloped we plan on taking it down and putting up a 14 000 square foot state of the art facility we're going to work our way up from 200 pounds a month McCann and his family are fourth generation red Bankers with a personal connection to their cannabis company G's trees cultivation Club it's named after my cousin Greg who we call G and we saw the power of cannabis and what it can do for people who are sick he passed away at the age of 16. that's really why we started G's trees in honor of him doctors kept giving him medicine but cannabis was the only thing that he wanted to use ultimately and it brought us together as a family which is really beautiful in his last days they say they've invested hundreds of thousands of dollars to start their new company when they applied Red Bank had approved a general framework for cannabis sales without giving out any licenses tonight the Borough Council will vote on an ordinance that would overhaul how cannabis is sold in Red Bank restricting licenses to just one cultivator and three retail shops for the entire Borough Council president Michael Ballard says he heard a lot of outcry from people concerned about how cannabis might affect Red Bank we're a mile and a half square and again built out so that there's not a lot of places for it to go and we wanted to make sure that we one supported a healthy cannabis industry that is new and growing in Red Bank but also to be mindful and respectful of our residents who have concerns about cannabis and don't want it near the schools and churches the new ordinance would also redraw maps to make sure Cannabis shops aren't too close to schools and churches McCann says if Red Bank approves the ordinance and his company doesn't get the license he might sue the borough under land use laws I'm really hoping that the Red Bank changes in their mind and maybe that's two cultivators in town it would only be a benefit to them for the tax purposes for the fact that cultivators don't want any consumers on site they don't even really want them to know where their site is cultivators aren't seen there's a limited amount of people in that go in and out of the business um they all they do really is build up a sophisticated warehouse space to grow cannabis they redesign the structure of the buildings they they improve the town they pay more taxes Red Bank may find itself spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to defend a lawsuit which quite frankly doesn't need to happen I think it's a very simple solution I think Red Bank can do something very simple they can change their ordinance but grandfather uh the folks who are currently in the process Who currently have Township approval Ballard says he's confident Red Bank would win any lawsuit if the ordinance passes it would set up a licensing procedure for the borough and set priorities for what's most important in a cannabis company among the things that we will be looking at are uh Financial stability uh uh experience and regulated Industries such as a medical field also your locality to Red Bank are you a native red Banker or I live in the immediate area we want to be a part of Red Bank because we are homegrown we've lived here we've grown up here we could have went many other towns but we want Red Bank because we just love the community McCann says at least two cultivators have gotten resolutions to set up shop but it might come down to just one license to grow cannabis in his community in Red Bank I'm Ted Goldberg NJ Spotlight news [Music]
