She was our first born, but her time with us would be less than nine months.
There were a number of forces that brought us through that experience, but in a very real way, I knew I had to get up and ride.
[light rock music] - Somebody had turned on the TV, and said, "Check this out."
"Oh, I don't know, what is this?"
He's like, "It's something called MTV."
- [Personality] Rocking and rolling with MTV Music Television.
- [Interviewee] That helped a little bit of home sickness.
[announcer faintly speaks] [fans cheering] - I didn't think that I was learning any lessons, but looking back, I did.
[light rock music] - I got hit with something, [laughs] and I didn't like it.
[light rock music] - I can remember coming into very large interstates.
That scared me to death.
- He said, "Mom, I'm HIV positive."
♪ Life goes on ♪ - And I said, "Oh my God, you're gonna die."
♪ After the thrill of living is gone ♪ - Chuck had some deal with McDonald's, right?
- Yeah- - Yeah, he had some deal.
- I just remember eating a lot of food, laughing a lot, and then being asleep on the floor in the restaurant.
♪ So let it rock ♪ - At that age, nobody thinks about the consequences.
- [Bicyclist] Real tough and demanding.
♪ Save my soul ♪ - I had been singing that song.
- Everybody's like, "Shut up, Paul."
♪ As long as you can ♪ - I don't think I should be doing this.
I don't think I'm gonna make it.
♪ Changes come around real soon ♪ ♪ Make us women and men ♪ - Chuck says, "I'm gonna give this a go too."
- We kept saying, "Let go," and he didn't, and came slamming back into the tree.
- [Paul] John Cougar crystallized the poetry of our whole summer right there.
- [Subject] We know that it gives confidence to do other things in life.
[light guitar music] - Suddenly you look back and you think, "Wow, I've come a long way."
[laughs] ♪ Oh yeah ♪ - When I look at other people and what they're struggling with, they don't have what I have, because of that trip.
I know you can do hard things.
You just keep pedaling, no matter what.
♪ They say life goes on ♪ - [Dad] This was a moment to really just live life to the fullest.
