AND I ALWAYS REPLY, "HOW MUCH DO YOU EAT AND SLEEP IN ONE DAY?"
THERE'S NO DOUBT THAT IT TAKES TIME, ENERGY, AND WE'D INCLUDE IN THAT THE GUMPTION AND DESIRE TO DO IT, AND IT TAKES MONEY.
QUILTS CAN BE PLACED IN THREE CATEGORIES-- THE APPLIQUE ONES, THE PIECED ONES, AND THE WHOLE CLOTH.
NOW QUITE OFTEN WE MIX UP AND COMBINE ELEMENTS FROM EACH OF THESE, WHICH MAKES OUR CREATIVE CLOTH ART THAT MUCH MORE FUN.
WELCOME TO OUR STUDIO PLAN JUST FOR YOU TO LEARN HOW ALL OF THESE QUILTS ARE GOING TO BE MADE.
HOW DO YOU GET STARTED?
WELL, YOU NEED FABRIC, YOU NEED BATTING, AND THEN YOU NEED SOMETHING TO CUT APART ALL THAT FABRIC.
SCISSORS ARE OK, BUT WE'RE GOING TO THE ROTARY CUTTER TODAY, AND THE NICE MATS AND THE RULERS THAT GO WITH THEM.
OF COURSE, YOU'LL NEED SOME QUILT GOODIES AND SOME NOTIONS.
I DO WASH MY FABRIC.
I WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT IT'S NOT GOING TO RUN ONCE THE QUILT IS MADE.
I USE A GENTLE LAUNDRY DETERGENT, AND A LITTLE HINT THAT I MIGHT GIVE YOU WOULD BE TO PUT A PIECE OF WHITE FABRIC IN THE WASHING MACHINE, AND IF IT CONTINUES TO FADE, THEN JUST KEEP WASHING YOUR FABRIC.
MANY OF US ARE USING AN ORVIS QUILT SOAP BECAUSE IT HAS NO PHOSPHORUS IN IT.
AND THEN DYE FIXATIVE IS ALSO VERY GOOD IF YOUR FABRIC CONTINUES TO RUN AND YOU REALLY WANT TO USE THAT.
WE ARE TRULY CLOTH ARCHITECTS TODAY, AREN'T WE?
BECAUSE WE'RE WORKING WITH ALL SORTS OF ANGLES.
THE BASIC ANGLES ARE REALLY ALL WE NEED TO GET BY WITH IN QUILT MAKING.
OF COURSE, THE CIRCLE, THAT 360 DEGREES.
AND TO DO THAT WE USE OUR YARDSTICK BEING COMPASS ON A NARROW RULER, THE ONE-INCH, OR IT WILL FIT ON OUR YARDSTICK FOR THE BIG ANGLES.
WE KNOW THAT WE'RE GOING TO NEED THE 180, JUST A STRAIGHT LINE, HALF OF THAT 360.
WE'RE GOING TO RELY ON A 90 DEGREE, WHICH IS WHAT WE CALL OUR RIGHT ANGLES, AND THEN OUR 45.
SO I WOULDN'T BUY A RULER TODAY UNLESS IT HAD MY 45 MARKING ON IT FOR ALL THOSE BIAS CUTS AND FOR THE DIAMONDS THAT WE'RE GOING TO BE MAKING.
WE'LL WANT TO USE A 60 DEGREE ANGLE, TOO, FOR THOSE WIDER DIAMONDS THAT WE'LL BE MAKING, AND EQUILATERAL TRIANGLES.
REMEMBER, THOSE ANGLES ARE GOING TO PLACED--FOR INSTANCE, A 45 RIGHT ON THE STRAIGHT EDGE OF A SELVAGE, ON THE STRAIGHT OF THE GRAIN OR IT CAN BE ON THE CROSSWISE.
IF I LINE UP THAT 45 ON THE CROSSWISE, EVERY TIME I CUT HERE, I KNOW I'M CUTTING A TRUE BIAS.
NOW, IN ORDER TO PUT ALL OF THESE ANGLES TO USE, LET'S LOOK AT OUR QUILT THAT WE'RE GOING TO BE TEACHING TODAY.
IT'S CALLED "QUILT OF MANY FRIENDS."
YOU'RE GOING TO GATHER ALL YE PLAIDS TOGETHER.
AND IN LOOKING AT THE QUILT, WE REALIZE THAT EVERY PLAID ON THE BOLT TAKES A TURN IN BECOMING AUTOGRAPH STARS.
A MUSLIN BAND IS CENTERED RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE, A PERFECT SPACE FOR A MESSAGE AND SIGNATURE.
A GUILD PRESIDENT THAT HOLDS HER OFFICE FOR TWO SUCCEEDING YEARS, CERTAINLY DESERVES HER OWN "QUILT OF MANY FRIENDS."
THE SURPRISE BEGINS, OF COURSE, WHEN THE FALL NEWSLETTER GOES OUT, AND ONE PATTERN IS MISSING IN HER COPY.
IT'S ALWAYS A HUSH-HUSH SECRET UNTIL THE LAST MEETING WHEN THE RESULTS ARE UNFURLED.

OUR LESSON IS CENTERED AROUND A 12-INCH BLOCK, AND WE KNOW THAT IF IT'S DIVIDED IN 16 PATCHES, THAT WOULD BE FOUR ACROSS AND FOUR DOWN, THAT 4 INTO 12 IS 3.
SO THE SIZE WE'RE GOING TO BE DEALING WITH IS A THREE-INCH SQUARE.
THAT CENTER SECTION HAS FOUR OF THOSE THREE-INCH SQUARES, SO IT'S SIX INCHES.
I'M GOING TO GIVE YOU SOME MEASUREMENTS TO TAKE CARE OF THAT CENTER AREA.
YOU'D CUT OUT ONE PIECE OF MUSLIN THAT IS 6 1/2 INCHES BY 3 1/2, AND ON THAT YOU'RE GOING TO PRACTICE WRITING.
YOU'RE GOING TO DECIDE WHAT PEN YOU'RE GOING TO USE, AND I'D TRY OUT ALL THE PENS YOU'VE GOT.
WE QUITE OFTEN SIGN OUR QUILTS WITH FREEZER PAPER ON THE BACK SIDE BECAUSE IT STABILIZES IT.
BUT THEN GO AHEAD AND PUT IT IN SOME WATER AND CHECK IT AND MAKE SURE THAT YOUR PENS ARE NOT GOING TO FADE, BECAUSE, AFTER ALL, THIS QUILT'S GOING TO LAST YOU A LONG TIME.
SO CHECK IT OUT AND MAKE SURE EVERYTHING'S ALL RIGHT.
TO GO ON EITHER SIDE OF YOUR MUSLIN YOU'RE GOING TO CUT TWO OF YOUR PLAID MATERIALS, THAT WOULD BE 2 INCHES BY 6 1/2.

AND A LITTLE LESSON IN MATH GOES ALL THE WAY BACK TO OUR SIXTH GRADE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL MATH, BECAUSE NO LONGER ARE WE DEALING WITH TEMPLATES.
WELL, WE STARTED WITH CEREAL BOXES, DIDN'T WE?
WE WENT TO PLASTIC, WE WENT TO GRIDDED PLASTIC, WE WENT TO ALL SORTS OF DEVICES, AND WE'RE FINDING WE JUST DON'T NEED THESE ANYMORE.
WE RECOGNIZE THAT WHAT WE DO NEED IS A QUARTER-INCH ON ALL THREE SIDES OF A RIGHT ANGLE TRIANGLE.
WELL, WE CAN PUT THESE AWAY, BECAUSE NOW WE'RE GOING TO ADD WITH OUR CALCULATOR A QUARTER-INCH AND THE EXTENSION THAT COMES OUT TO A POINT, AND THAT COMES TO SEVEN-EIGHTHS.
SO, IN THIS PARTICULAR QUILT THAT IS GOING TO HAVE THE RIGHT ANGLE SET IN THIS PARTICULAR MANNER, WE KNOW THAT WE'RE ALWAYS ADDING SEVEN-EIGHTHS.

AND THEN, ONCE AGAIN, WITH MY ROTARY CUTTER AND MY RULER, I CAN THEN CUT ON THE DIAGONAL AND SIMPLY CUT THAT APART EACH WAY.
CONTINUE CUTTING UNTIL I'VE GOT MY EIGHT DIVISIONS.
ONCE THOSE ARE CUT I LIKE TO PRESS IN OPPOSITE DIRECTIONS.

I THOUGHT WHEN I LOOKED AT THIS WONDERFUL ANTIQUE QUILT, THAT, PERHAPS, IN STUDYING THE WAY IT WAS DONE-- I FIRST THOUGHT, "OH, MY!
IT'S OHIO STAR."
AND HERE WE HAVE THAT LONG RIGHT ANGLE TRIANGLE WITH THE LONG SIDE ON THE OUTSIDE.
THE MORE I STUDIED THIS QUILT I REALIZED WHY WOULD A QUILTER LONG AGO HAVE DONE A BLOCK LIKE THIS AND MIXED HER COLORS OF TRIANGLES?
IT WASN'T UNTIL I WENT TO THE CORNER OF THIS QUILT AND REALLY STARTED STUDYING IT THAT I REALIZED THERE IS NOT A BLOCK IN THE CORNER AND THAT THE WAY THIS QUILT WAS MADE WAS SIMPLY BY DOING A POSITIVE AND A NEGATIVE SQUARE THAT COMES TOGETHER.
AND IT HAD NEVER DAWNED ON ME THAT BY DOING THAT, ROW AFTER ROW, YOU ENDED UP WITH AN OHIO STAR BLOCK BUT SET ON POINT.
WE'VE DATED THIS AROUND 1850 TO 1870 AND IT TRULY IS A WONDERFUL QUILT.
WE'RE GOING TO STUDY EQUILATERAL TRIANGLE.
THAT'S ANOTHER ANGLE I NEED TO SHOW YOU.
THE 60-DEGREE ANGLE IS PREVALENT IN MUCH OF OUR PATCHWORK.
GO AHEAD AND FIND THAT 60-DEGREE MARK ON YOUR RULER AND THEN PLACE IT UP ON THIS PARTICULAR QUILT AND YOU CAN SEE HOW THAT WHEN IT FOLLOWS A STRAIGHT LINE, WE HAVE THAT PERFECT ANGLE DOWN HERE, KNOWING THAT YOUR 60-DEGREE IS RIGHT HERE.
ONE EQUILATERAL TRIANGLE TO MAKE THIS ENTIRE QUILT.
IT'S SOMETIMES CALLED "THE THOUSAND PYRAMIDS" QUILT, BUT THERE AREN'T A THOUSAND PIECES IN THIS.
WE CALL THIS "JEFF'S WEDDING QUILT," SO WE'LL CALL IT "EQUILATERAL LOVE."
MAYBE TAKE THE LEFTOVERS FROM THAT "QUILT OF MANY FRIENDS" AND CUT OUT MANY DIFFERENT PLAIDS TO GO IN THIS QUILT.
IT'S INTERESTING TO KNOW THAT ONE OF THESE TRIANGLES, WHEN IT COMES WITH ANOTHER ONE, FORMS THAT 60-DEGREE DIAMOND THAT WE SEE SO MUCH IN OUR PATCHWORK.
THREE OF THOSE 60-DEGREE DIAMONDS WILL THEN FORM A HEXAGON.
NOW YOU CAN SEE THIS PARTICULAR QUILT, WE HAD A LOT OF FUN MOVING THOSE TRIANGLES AROUND.
I HOPE YOU HAVE SPACE IN YOUR HOME WHERE YOU CAN HAVE THE LUXURY OF BUYING A BAT, MAYBE THE BAT THAT'S GOING TO GO INSIDE THE QUILT, AND MOUNTING IT ON A WALL.
IN THAT MANNER YOU CAN TAKE ONE TRIANGLE AND THEN MOVE IT AROUND, DECIDING EXACTLY WHERE YOU WANT TO PLACE IT.
WE HAVE CHOSEN THIS TIME TO START WITH A STAR IN THE CENTER, AND THEN AS IT RADIATES OUT IN A VERY SUBTLE MANNER YOU CAN SEE A BLUE HEXAGON, AND THEN A GREEN HEXAGON, AND THEN THE RED HEXAGON.
AND IT GETS REAL SUBTLE AS IT COMES OUTWARD.
IT WAS PIECED IN LONG HORIZONTAL ROWS, AND I'VE DECIDED TO END THE QUILT WITH A LIGHT BORDER AND THEN A DARK BORDER.
NOTICE THAT IT'S READILY ACCEPTED TODAY IN OUR BORDERS TO GO AHEAD AND PIECE THEM.
IT ALLOWS YOU NOT TO BUY SUCH A LONG AMOUNT OF FABRIC.
AND THAT PIECING CAN BE A DIAGONAL PIECE.
IT REALLY GETS LOST IN THE BORDER AS LONG AS YOU'RE DOING THAT 45-DEGREE PIECING.
AND, OF COURSE, I'LL SNIP OFF THESE LITTLE DOG EARS.

THAT ALLOWS THAT WONDERFUL MEETING OF THAT INTERSECTION HERE WHERE YOU WILL THEN SEE THAT HEXAGON FORM AGAIN... OR IT COULD BE DIAMONDS.
NO MATTER WHAT YOU SEE YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE A FUN DESIGN IN THIS QUILT.
WE'RE GOING TO GO TO THE SEWING MACHINE AND I'M GOING TO SHOW YOU HOW TO PIECE EACH OF THOSE TOGETHER.
BUT START FIRST WITH CUTTING OUT THE TRIANGLES.
THE ADDITION THAT YOU'RE GOING TO MAKE FOR ALL EQUILATERAL TRIANGLES IS THREE-QUARTERS OF AN INCH.
A QUARTER-INCH AT THE BASE, AND A HALF AN INCH AT THE TOP.
SO IF WE WOULD BE STARTING IN THIS CASE WITH A FIVE-INCH PLUS .75, WHICH IS OUR THREE-QUARTERS, WE KNOW THAT WE'RE GOING TO BE WORKING ON A WIDTH OF FIVE AND THREE-QUARTERS.
IN THIS CASE, WE SIMPLY CUT OUR FABRIC FIVE AND THREE-QUARTERS WITH OUR 60 DEGREE, WE ANGLE IT THIS WAY, AND THEN WE MOVE IT AROUND TO ANGLE IT DOWN HERE AT THE BASE.
AND WITH THAT CUT YOUR SEAM ALLOWANCE IS INCLUDED FOR THE SIDE ALSO.
NOW IT MAKES A LOT MORE SENSE FOR ME TO SHOW YOU IN CLOTH, SO LET'S DO IT.
WE'VE GOT SCRAP PLAIDS--THREE OF THEM THIS TIME LINED UP-- 60 DEGREE AT THE TOP, LINE THAT UP, AND THEN ONE CUT, SWING THAT AROUND, SO THAT'S ALL THE WAY LINED UP AGAIN.
AND MAKE SURE THAT THIS POINT REACHES THAT VERY TIP.
AND YOU SEE HOW I'M ANGLED THERE?
SO THEN I'M GOING TO STRAIGHTEN THAT OUT SO I'VE GOT THE EXACT WIDTH AGAIN.

ALL RIGHT, NOW WE'RE GETTING READY TO DO OUR PIECEWORK ON THIS ROW AND I'D LIKE TO REVIEW A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THAT.
WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT WE'RE ALWAYS USING A GOOD QUALITY THREAD AND A NEUTRAL COLOR, GRAY OR OFF-WHITE, IS USUALLY GOOD, ESPECIALLY IN A SCRAP QUILT LIKE THIS.
A GOOD WAY TO TEST THAT QUARTER-INCH IS TO USE SOME GRID PAPER.
WE WANT ALL OF OUR SEAM ALLOWANCES UNIFORM AND A TRUE QUARTER-INCH SEAM.
SO IF YOU WILL SIMPLY PUT THE GRID PAPER UNDERNEATH YOUR PRESSER FOOT AND LOWER YOUR NEEDLE RIGHT DOWN ON THAT LINE, YOU WILL HAVE AN IDEA OF WHERE MEASURING OVER A QUARTER-INCH, WHERE THE RAW EDGE IS GOING TO MEET YOUR PRESSER FOOT.
YOU CAN EITHER MARK WITH SOME MASKING TAPE, OR I FIND IT EASIER, ESPECIALLY ON MY MACHINE, TO GO AHEAD, AND WITH MY COMMAND BALL MOVE MY NEEDLE POSITION OVER.
SO THAT THEN IT WOULD BE CUTTING EXACTLY WHERE I WOULD WANT IT AND I CAN RIDE MY--MY NEEDLE HAS GONE OVER AND MY RAW EDGE WILL THEN LINE THE EDGE OF MY PRESSER FOOT.
ANOTHER WAY TO DO IT IS TO HALVE, IN THIS CASE, REMOVE MY PRESSER FOOT, AND USE A NICE PATCHWORK FOOT.
A QUARTER-INCH EXACTLY TO THE OUTSIDE EDGE AND AT THE VERY TIP AND EIGHTH OF AN INCH FOR MINIATURES.
SO THEN I'M READY TO START MY SEWING AND I LIKE TO PIN AHEAD IN THIS PARTICULAR INSTANCE.

GO AHEAD AND PRE-WASH IT, AND THEN PRESS THAT CENTER FOLD AGAIN.
YOU'RE GOING TO--JUST AS YOU BOUGHT IT AT THE STORE, WHERE IT HAD THAT NICE CREASE.
YOU'RE GOING TO USE THAT AGAIN IN A FEW MINUTES.
REMOVE THE SELVAGES, YOU DON'T NEED THOSE.
AND I'D LIKE TO POINT OUT THAT ON THE BACK OF A QUILT WE DON'T WANT A CENTER SEAM DOWN THE BACK.
YOU WANT TO CREATE TWO SIDE SEAMS SO THAT THEY ARE BALANCED.
THE SAME AMOUNT OF FABRIC THEN WILL BE ON EITHER SIDE OF THOSE TWO SIDE SEAMS.
AND THAT MAKES IT A LOT STRONGER, RATHER THAN HAVING THE TENSION PULLED ON THAT CENTER SEAM.
SO I HAVE FOUND A QUICK WAY TO DO THAT IS WHEN YOUR SELVAGES ARE REMOVED, GO AHEAD AND DO A QUARTER-INCH SEAM DOWN THE LENGTH ON BOTH SIDES.
THEN ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS OPEN THIS UP AND PULL THIS ONTO YOUR IRONING BOARD.
AND, REMEMBER YOU'VE GOT THAT NICE SEAM THAT YOU PRESSED, AND THEN YOU CAN JUST KEEP PULLING THAT ON AND CUT THAT APART.
THIS WAY YOU DON'T HAVE TO WORRY AT ALL ABOUT CUTTING ANY OF YOUR BACKING.
AND SO THEN JUST CONTINUE WITH PULLING THAT ALL THE WAY UP AND EACH TIME PUTTING YOUR RULER DOWN AND CUTTING THAT APART.
I THINK THAT WORKS VERY NICE.
