[classical music] - Being outside and connecting in nature is part of the human experience.
It's good for our physical health.
It's good for our mental health and it's a huge community builder because you meet and see all kinds of people when you're out and about.
My first venture out to the Occoneechee Speedway was probably about a year after I moved to Hillsborough.
Once I discovered it I couldn't believe I hadn't been before.
It is a great place to go take your little kids.
It's nice and flat and shaded, really special.
For about 20 years, from the late 40s to the late 60s, it was an actual Speedway race car track and you can still see evidence of that and it's really cool to be able to walk on that.
Even though Occoneechee Speedway feels like a public park already, it's actually owned by a private foundation, but the Eno River Association is helping facilitate a purchase of that property that will eventually be transferred over to the State Parks Association, so the Speedway will be part of the public domain for the foreseeable future.
Having these trails and greenways and public spaces in general is a really important part of the Hillsborough identity.
They're places that are accessible to everyone.
It's a place for the people who already live and work here to come together and build community and enjoy the out of doors.
