Nat, Nico, thank you so much for having us here at your lovely Lincoln Street Farm.
I'll just jump right in.
What materials do you need for lavender propagation?
- So, you're gonna need a plant that's in the right stage, that's mature enough, that it has new growth, but it's not yet flowering.
And then you're gonna need some rooting hormone ,some soil.
- [Nico] Yeah, you can use vermiculite, you can use seed starting soil.
Just anything that will help it take root and give a good start Has extra nutrients.
- [Interviewer] Yeah, all right, Sweet.
And then this growing hormone you can just get wherever?
- Yup, Yup.
This is the... - - It's just a little powder in here.
We'll show you how to use it, but it's really easy.
- [Interviewer] Can you give us a little demo?
- Yeah, So, let's get started.
Take one of these.
So, here we have a potential whole new lavender plant.
So, first we'll take off all of the leaves.
Just these top ones.
- [Nico] Just the very top two.
- [Neo] Sort of trim off this very top part to stimulate growth right there.
And so, it's just gonna look like this.
- A little Y.
- [Interviewer] Wow!
- [Nico] Next part is the rooting hormone.
- [Nat] Dip and poke it right in.
- [Interviewer] Wow, That's it, so easy.
- As long as you make the clips in the right spot and have right soil it should have no problem taking root.
- What did we say, eight weeks?
- Yeah, those are about seven to eight weeks old.
They look just like that.
- [Nat] Yeah so, the first things that'll happen are these will start to grow there.
And then these are about a month later, thank you.
And then these are like another month.
So, it takes a while but it is a lot faster than - - [Nico] Germinating it... - germinating it from seeds.
- [Interviewer] Is that why you do it, rather than just from seeds is because it's just so much easier and faster?
- Yeah, it's one of those things where you can of get it going a little quicker.
A lavender seed can take up to 30-40 days to germinate.
So, and that's even under extremely temperate conditions.
This is what happens when they don't take root, they kind of die a little bit.
- [Interviewer] That's a great example.
- After we had successfully done this several times, we're like, "We got it!"
And then you sorta let your guard down.
And this is one of those where we're like, "oh wait..." - [Nico] You do need to put a humidity dome on top them and keep them moist at all times or else it will be hard to get that new growth regenerated.
- [Interviewer] Okay, gotcha.
How much light do they need?
- [Nico] So, we put them under grow lights in our nursery.
- - [Interviewer] So, you have grow lights?
- [Nico] Mm-hm, and then when you misted, it kinda like creates just a little, steamy, good... - I make micro climate for it to love.
- [Nat] Yeah and you can kinda tell that it's the right level of humidity cause you'll see a little condensation on the sides and things like that.
- [Nico] We also like collecting different varieties from around the neighborhood and from our friends To try and get new varieties and strains in our garden.
And Utah is such the perfect climate for it to grow because it comes from the Mediterranean and we have hot dry summers here.
And that's what lavender needs to thrive.
Too much water, forget it, it won't do great.
- [Interviewer] Thanks for watching, we hope you enjoyed this video.
