[upbeat music] ♪ - Welcome to North Carolina Weekend, everyone.
I'm Deborah Holt Noel, and today I am indulging at Guglhupf in Durham, an innovative bakery, cafe and biergarten that's become a staple in the triangle.
Serving contemporary cuisine with southern German roots since 1998, Guglhupf bakery and patisserie has become a popular foodie destination, emphasizing local and seasonal ingredients.
We'll explore it throughout the show.
But first, let's head over to the eastern part of our state, where a husband and wife's made from scratch bakery is bringing in the local sweet tooths.
Let's visit Val's Gourmet Baked Goods in Washington.
- Here we have a lemon blueberry cheesecake cake.
- [Narrator] Yep, you heard the word cake twice.
That's because this lemon blueberry cake has a New York cheesecake in the middle.
It's one of the most popular cakes at Val's Gourmet Baked Goods in downtown Washington.
- [Art] When you taste it, you taste the love that goes into it, not just the flavor of the cake.
- [Narrator] Art and Val Jackson are the ones who put the love into their baked goods, and they're truly homemade.
The Jacksons make their cakes, pies, quiches, pastries and other baked goods at home and take them to the store.
They were both chefs in the Washington, DC area before moving to Little Washington in 2016.
They decided to start baking for a living.
- We started with her grandmother's recipe for carrot cake, which is the best that I know, and I've been in the business for a long time.
- And my mother's yellow cake recipe.
- The yellow cake recipe, yeah.
The yellow cake was a base recipe that could create all kinds of things.
It could be strawberry, it could be blueberry, it could be almost anything.
- [Narrator] They started selling their carrot cake and other baked goods under a small tent at an outdoor farmer's market.
- [Art] It just seemed to take off from the very first week we were down there.
People just enjoyed it.
- [Narrator] Each year they had to get a bigger tent.
- We had so much food under there and we didn't know we were even doing it, but we kept doing it 'cause people kept asking.
- [Narrator] Eventually they moved into an indoor market so they could sell year round, but the pandemic shut it down.
The Arts of the Pamlico offered the Jacksons this gallery space in its historic Turnage Theater building.
- [Art] The theater is a great location.
- [Narrator] Events at the theater attract customers for the Jacksons, and vice versa.
Val's Gourmet is also the theater's built-in caterer.
- So now not only are we doing baking, we also take care of the Turnage as far as their needs.
Put a label on that, says Reyna's party.
- [Narrator] The Jacksons also cater outside events like parties and weddings, and in the shop they sell other local goods like peanuts, honey and salsa.
- This is a new one, white chocolate peanut butter.
- [Narrator] The Jacksons are always experimenting with their cakes, but the carrot cake remains the most popular.
- People come from Jacksonville and Raleigh and Greenville and Bath and the whole area, saying I've heard about the carrot cake, and that's what I want to try.
- [Narrator] The turtle cake is also very popular.
It's a chocolate cake with caramel, pecans and chocolate ganache with a caramel New York cheesecake in the middle.
The strawberry cheesecake is another favorite.
- I wanted Val's Gourmet to be that spot to go to to get the good cake.
- [Narrator] It's a regular weekend spot for Seth Laughlin and his children Annabelle and Evan.
- The baked goods are awesome, but the people are very kind and helpful and they kind of make us feel special every time we come.
- [Narrator] Evan likes the cinnamon rolls and Annabelle likes the cakes.
- I like everything, so I'll get cookies.
Today I got a blueberry turnover, which is delicious.
Oh, last week we had fresh strawberry shortcake.
- [Narrator] The Jacksons say their baked goods can be a mood changer for their customers.
- Someone could have a bad day and have a bite of one of our cakes, and their whole mood changes.
It's like they're happy now.
- [Val] I want them to feel the same way I felt when my mom and my grandma made it for me.
- [Art] When you bite into a piece of our cake, then it just says this is homemade, this is love.
Something that tastes so good you're like, this is made from the heart.
- [Val] Yes.
- You can find Val's Gourmet Baked Goods at 150 West Main Street in Washington.
They have new summer hours and are open Wednesday through Sunday.

The coffee here is amazing.
Now across our state in Asheville, the Montford neighborhood is renowned for its large, beautifully restored homes.
Perhaps the most famous is also the longest running, which offers opulence from a bygone era.
We sent Caleb Owolabi to visit The Lion and the Rose Bed and Breakfast in Asheville.
- I just spent the most amazing weekend at The Lion and the Rose Bed and Breakfast here in beautiful Asheville, North Carolina, located in historic Montford district of downtown Asheville.
The Lion and the Rose is the perfect destination for those looking for the ideal getaway.
The house was built in 1896, and still retains so much of its Victorian charm.
When I arrived, I checked into the beautiful Marion Hall room.
This is just one of four standard guest rooms at The Lion and the Rose.
It's got a number of historic heirlooms in terms of the furniture in here.
The history of the property is rich, and we had the opportunity to sit down with one of the owners, Karen Wilson, to learn more about this beautiful home.
- We're one of the oldest bed and breakfasts in the area.
The previous owners really did a lot of collecting about the history, the families that lived here, old photographs and all that fun stuff.
- [Caleb] This is a photo of the actual bed and breakfast?
- [Karen] It sure is.
- Circa 1900.
- It's the oldest photograph we have.
- It is pretty amazing.
- [Caleb] Interesting, so this was the first family that was in ownership of the bed and breakfast.
Charity Rush Craig.
- Exactly, she was here from 1896 to 1913.
- The oldest son in the Toms family, wow.
- He was friends with Thomas Wolfe.
- So they were contemporaries and they were friends.
Charles French Toms, Junior.
That is amazing.
You guys have done a great job to preserve this history and leave it here for the guests to see.
- Exactly, most people are really fascinated by the history.
- After sitting down with Karen, I just had to check out some of the wonderful amenities The Lion and the Rose had to offer.
One of the most unique things about The Lion and the Rose is the house-made craft beer, brewed by Karen's husband and the other owner of the bed and breakfast, Steve.
[relaxed music] Wow, and what was this called?
- That one, what do we call that one?
- Just The Lion and the Rose?
- [Karen] Just The Lion and the Rose.
- Is this it?
Oh my, happy to be at The Lion and the Rose.
- I think we'll call it the Shock Lion.
- This is delicious, really.
- It's shocking how good it is?
- It's shockingly good, shockingly cold, crisp.
That is amazing, thank you for that.
After an amazing day, I headed back to my room and enjoyed a relaxing evening to myself.
We all know the best thing about a bed and breakfast is the breakfast.
Karen prepares a delicious homemade meal every morning for guests.
That is delicious.
The beer that Steve actually brews here is inside of this mimosa.
This is seriously delightful.
I've got my sausage, pancakes here, the egg and cheese cup.
I gotta dig into this.
So good.
The Lion and the Rose Bed and Breakfast, an 1896 classic, beautiful furniture, luxurious rooms, and I will say one of the best breakfasts I've ever had.
Have a visit yourself some weekend.
See you next time.

Since 1997, the Pour House Music Hall has been the premier place to find live music in the triangle, and now this iconic Raleigh venue is putting a new spin on an old tradition.
Let's join Chelsea Goodnight as she heads down Blount Street to dig through the crates at their record shop.
- The Pour House to me is a staple of this community and of this city.
You walk in there, the sound is great, the beer is great.
It's just a good place to be, man.
If you're just coming town and you're like, what's the downtown scene?
Well music, Pour House.
I walked in and I had five records I wanted to buy within 15 minutes.
- The Pour House opened in 1997, and as the years have gone on, the focus on music and live entertainment has only grown.
It literally just popped into my head one day.
I was like, oh man, we need to make that a record shop.
- [Sharp] You need places like the Pour House.
You go through that alley man, and you're immersed in Raleigh.
That's basically what's going on here.
- I'm Chelsea Goodnight, and today we're at the Pour House Music Hall and Record Store.
Music hall downstairs, record store upstairs, let's check it out.
- I go by the name Ghost Dog.
I have been emceeing since 1994, and they support hip-hop, so ever since then we've been on a real good rapport.
- In a typical week, you can see all sorts of genres performing live, from hip-hop to rock, jazz, R&B, soul, bluegrass, funk, jam bands.
We book around 1,200 bands per year.
A typical year sees bands from all 50 states and 15 to 30 countries, depending on the year.
If it's good, we try to program it.
Right now, Kate Rhudy's playing tonight to a sold out show that we sold out in advance, and you could be up in the shop right now listening to them practice and sound check.
Get a little sneak preview.
Pretty cool, unique experience of being able to sit here and flip through records during a show and watch the band is a pretty cool experience.
- [Chelsea] Adam I guess had the idea to start recording these live shows with the opening of the record shop.
Really, that's a great idea.
[relaxed music] - We are starting to record live shows that are happening downstairs, and we're taking those shows and recording them and pressing them to limited edition vinyl runs.
The goal is to do one every month, and we're creating a record club, so we're creating 200 records per show, so very limited release.
They'll all be numbered and signed, and it's a chance to basically take a little slice of history home with you.
So if you know of Kate Rhudy for example within the next five years starts winning all these Grammys, which she's totally going to, it's gonna become a collector's item.
♪ You're not the one who hurt me then ♪ - It's a big undertaking.
I think it's very, very cool.
It's my first live record, and it's with a venue I've been playing at since I got here, and it allows me to show how those songs have evolved and grown with me over the years.
It's just nice for people to have something to take home.
I think it'll be a really cool keepsake.

They're open Thursday through Sunday.

There are so many cool spaces to sit and enjoy yourself here at Guglhupf, and the pastries are always fresh, always delicious, made right here in their own bakery.
You know, I'm not the only person who has discovered something really good here at Guglhupf.
We saw Bob Garner checking out their Sunday brunch, and now he says it's one of his favorite, most relaxing spots.
Let's see what he sampled.
[upbeat music] - I've eaten at Guglhupf's many times over the years.
I love it 'cause it has a nice, cheerful buzz, there's water fountains right next to you, there's lots of conversation.
That's what makes the place magic to me.
- I'm a very strong believer that ambiance is very important and that it's a community place where people can meet up, you're comfortable but yet it's casual.
You just hang out, we have really good food, very good beverages, you have an environment that's really just comfortable.
- The menu is contemporary with southern German roots.
Now I happened to visit at Sunday brunch, but even this croissantwich has kind of a German touch.
There's scrambled eggs, there's Gruyere cheese, there's Westphalian ham.
Look at that, there's avocado in there.
Doesn't that look wonderful?
Oh, my.
This is an Alsatian potato leek tart.
That looks so great.
It's served with a wonderful looking cucumber salad.
Let's have a look at this baby.
You've got potatoes, you have leeks, you have fine herbs, you have Gruyere cheese.
Ooh, ooh, ooh.
Personally, I love to make potato leek soup, so this is right in my wheelhouse.
Beer at lunchtime?
You bet.
This is a Schneider Weisse, which is a wheat beer, which I really love.
That's the reason it's not clear.
On both the daytime and the dinner menu, you'll be drawn to this absolutely gorgeous pounded out pork schnitzel, gloriously topped with a fried egg.
How many times in Germany and elsewhere in Europe did I eat a meal like this with a fried egg on top?
It's interesting to me that a lot of southern-type restaurants have really kind of adopted schnitzel, pork schnitzel.
It's not surprising, because that is terrific stuff.
Here's a larger version of a wurst sandwich.
This is bratwurst with sauerkraut on a pretzel sub roll.
It's served with Swabian potato salad, and I just have to at least take a bite of that.
Very manly sandwich.
There's an incredible array of breads, pastries, cakes and cookies to carry home from the bakery, which also prepares desserts for the cafe, such as fruit tart.
The fruit tart is really one of the main visual dessert icons of this place.
I love the spongecake there.
It's got some structural integrity to it.
The owner and staff privately call this unique dining destination Gugland.
You'll totally understand why.
- Guglhupf is in Durham at 2706 Durham-Chapel Hill Boulevard.
They're open Tuesday through Sunday, and are currently serving on the patio only, but that may change.
For more information, give them a call at [919] 401-2600 or visit their website at guglhupf.com.
