THIS FIRST INSECT IS A NUT WEEVIL.
THEY ARE A LITTLE CLUMSY AT GETTING OFF THE GROUND, BUT THEY WORK HARD TO FLAP THEIR WINGS AND TAKE OFF.
WEEVILS ARE SMALL AND FAST, SO IT CAN BE HARD TO WATCH WHAT THEY'’RE DOING WITHOUT THE HELP OF TECHNOLOGY.
THEIR ROUND BODIES AND LONG LEGS SEEM TO MAKE IT HARD FOR THEM TO FLY, BUT THEY STILL MANAGE TO GET THE JOB DONE THROUGH HARD WORK.
IF YOU LOOK AT THIS WEEVIL AT DIFFERENT ANGLES, YOU CAN SEE JUST HOW AMAZING THEY ARE.
THEIR WINGS ARE ALMOST TWICE AS LONG AS THEIR BODIES, MEANING THEY HAVE TO FOLD THEM UP WHEN THEY AREN'’T IN USE.
THAT'’S WHY THEY PROTECT THEM WITH THE HARD COVERINGS YOU CAN SEE ON THE BACK.
THESE COVERINGS WILL POP UP TO ALLOW THE WINGS TO UNFOLD WHILE THE WEEVIL THROWS ITS FRONT LEGS INTO THE AIR TO GET THEM OUT OF THE WAY, SO THEIR WINGS CAN FLAP.
HERE IS A LARGER INSECT CALLED A KATYDID.
YOU MIGHT FIND THEM IN TREES OR TALL GRASSES, AND THEY ARE AMAZING JUMPERS WITH THEIR LONG LEGS.
THEY USE THEIR BEAUTIFUL WINGS TO GLIDE THROUGH THE AIR ONCE THEY JUMP OFF THE GROUND, BUT TO DO THIS, THEY MUST FIRST UNFOLD THEIR WINGS.
IF YOU LOOK CLOSELY, YOU CAN SEE THE MINI FOLDS IN THEIR WINGS, MUCH LIKE A PAPER FAN.
THIS KATYDID IS NAMED AFTER ITS POINTY HEAD SHAPE.
IT'’S CALLED THE HOOK-FACED CONEHEAD KATYDID.
THIS BUSH KATYDID SHOWS OFF ITS SUPER LONG LEGS HERE.
THEIR LEGS ARE ALMOST TWICE AS LONG AS THEIR BODY, MAKING THEM A STRONG JUMPER EVEN AMONG OTHER KATYDIDS.
IT JUMPS SO FAR, THAT IT GOES OFF SCREEN BEFORE WE CAN CATCH A GLIMPSE OF IT FLYING.
THIS LESSER ANGLE KATYDID IS AMAZING AT CAMOUFLAGE, WITH ITS UNIQUE LEAFLIKE WINGS.
IF YOU LOOK AT THE WING IN THE BACK, YOU CAN SEE THAT THE TIP OF IT IS DAMAGED.
IT LOOKS LIKE SOMETHING MAY HAVE TAKEN A BITE OUT OF THE WING WHILE THE KATYDID MADE AN ESCAPE.
HOWEVER, THE DAMAGED WING DOESN'’T SEEM TO BOTHER THE KATYDID AS IT FLIES AWAY.
THIS BLACK-AND-YELLOW INSECT ISN'’T A WASP OR BEE, BUT A BARK LOUSE.
DESPITE THE NAME, BARK LICE DON'’T HARM THE PLANTS THEY LIVE ON, SO YOU DON'’T NEED TO WORRY ABOUT THEM CAUSING DAMAGE.
THEY PREFER TO EAT MOLD AND DECAYING PLANT MATTER, NOT LIVING PLANTS.
I THINK THEY LOOK AWESOME.
I REALLY LIKE THE SHADING OF VEINS ON THEIR WINGS.
IF YOU WATCH THEM CLOSELY, YOU WILL SEE THAT WHEN THEY ARE ABOUT TO TAKE OFF, THEY DO A LITTLE CROUCH AND JUMP INTO THE AIR AS THEY FLAP THEIR WINGS.
THESE BARK LICE ARE AMAZING FLYING INSECTS.
I ALSO LOVE THE YELLOW STRIPES THESE BARK LICE HAVE ON THEIR ABDOMENS AND HOW THEY'’RE ABLE TO HOLD THEIR FRONT LEGS UP HIGH, OUT OF THE WAY OF THEIR WINGS.
NEXT, I WANT TO SHOW YOU AN ASSASSIN BUG.
THIS IS A KILLER.
THIS CROWNED ASSASSIN BUG GETS THIS NAME BECAUSE IT HUNTS OTHER INSECTS AND IS VERY GOOD AT SNEAKING AROUND IN PLANTS TO CATCH THEIR PREY WITH THOSE SPIKY, HOOKED FRONT LEGS.
THOSE INTERESTING SPIKES ON ITS HEAD ARE WHY WE SAY IT HAS A CROWN.
THEY USE THOSE SPIKY LEGS TO GRAB AHOLD OF THEIR PREY AND THEN PIERCE IT WITH ITS SPECIAL MOUTH PARTS.
EVEN FLYING, THIS INSECT LOOKS READY FOR THE KILL, WITH ITS FRONT LEGS POISED TO STRIKE AND THE SMOOTH TAKEOFF.
OF COURSE, WE CAN'’T FORGET THE MOST OBVIOUS FLYING INSECT, THE FLY.
THEY'’RE SPECIALISTS AT TAKEOFF, MAKING IT LOOK EASY HERE.
BUT NOT ALL FLIES ARE THIS SKILLED.
SOME, LIKE THIS MARCH FLY, STRUGGLE A LITTLE BIT TO GET INTO THE AIR, BUT YOU CAN TELL THEY ARE FLIES BY THESE CLUB-LIKE HIND WINGS THAT ARE WOBBLING ABOUT.
THEY HELP THE FLY BALANCE IN THE AIR, SINCE THEY FLY AT FAST SPEEDS.
