SOME SCIENTISTS EVEN THINK THAT THE SPINNING HELPS THEM CONTROL HOW HIGH OR HOW FAR THEY TRAVEL.
WHEN SPRINGTAILS JUMP, THEY MOVE SO FAST, WE CAN'’T USE NORMAL CAMERAS TO FILM THEM.
OTHERWISE, WE GET A BLUR, LIKE THIS.
HERE AT THE MUSEUM, WE HAVE TO USE SPECIAL CAMERAS TO SEE JUST HOW THEY DO IT.
IN FACT, SPRINGTAILS MIGHT BE THE FASTEST-SPINNING CREATURE ON EARTH.
THIS BUG CAN SPIN FASTER THAN THE BLADES OF A HELICOPTER, AND FASTER THAN THE MOTORS OF OUR FASTEST RACECARS.
I WONDER IF THEY GET DIZZY.
WE STILL HAVE SO MUCH TO LEARN FROM SPRINGTAILS, BUT THE SPECIAL TECHNOLOGY NECESSARY TO STUDY THEM MAKES IT DIFFICULT.
ONE THING WE DO UNDERSTAND ABOUT SPRINGTAILS IS THEY GET THEIR NAME FROM A SPECIAL TAIL FOLDED UP UNDERNEATH THEIR BODY THAT ACTS JUST LIKE A SPRING.
SCIENTISTS CALL IT A "FURCULA."
IT HOLDS LOTS OF ENERGY IN PLACE UNTIL THE INSECT IS READY TO LEAP.
THEN, FASTER THAN THE BLINK OF AN EYE, THE TAIL SNAPS DOWNWARD, LAUNCHING THEM INTO THE AIR.
THIS TYPE OF SPRINGTAIL DEVELOPS SPECIAL CLAWS THAT STICK TO THE WATER, SO THEY CAN WALK AROUND WITHOUT FALLING IN.
SEE HOW ONLY THE VERY TIPS OF THEIR LEGS STICK TO THE SURFACE?
YOU MIGHT BE WONDERING WHERE SUCH COOL ANIMALS LIVE.
