Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(upbeat music) Cynthia: It is August, and we, Flappy and me, and everybody else in our house are swimming in produce.
It is the sweet part of the harvest, meaning we have peaches on, grapes, raspberries, blackberries, melons, all my favorite fruits.
I have been waiting for years for this tree to produce enough fruit that I can share with people.
It's a splash pluot, and if you are not familiar with a pluot, it's a mix between a plum and an apricot.
But this splash pluot in particular I fell in love with five years ago, and after that, I went on a hunt, found my trees, and I had two of them.
So we are eating and eating and eating along with freezing and drying and canning and saving as much as we can so we can enjoy the harvest all winter long, huh?
Huh?
As my good friend always tells me, August, you're living in the harvest.
If you know anything about gardening, you know that you're gonna have so much zucchini that you don't know what to do because that is August is like overabundance of zucchini.
There are so many awesome recipes out there.
One of my favorites, though, is I make what I call poop bread.
I can get rid of a lot of zucchini, get rid of some carrots, get rid of some bananas that have gone brown, freeze my bread and eat it all winter long.
So let's talk some poop bread.
I'm gonna be making it, but the recipe is in the show notes.
Plus, let's see what other things I like to make.
This is his peaches and cream.
It's so good.
We have lots of work to do, and I can't forget that I need to make sure that I'm harvesting seeds so that I have stuff to plant next year.
This is also the time of year that I have to remind myself I am pruning, I am hacking, that I am getting rid of garden waste, either composting or using my green waste bins.
Otherwise, by October, I'm gonna have a huge pile of waste that I need to find a place for.
The one great thing about this time of month is I can water a little less.
It's getting darker earlier, getting lighter later.
Plus, I want things to come on, so I am not gonna water as much as I usually do because I am trying to get that fruit ripened up.
Another thing to remember is you save all those containers, all those boxes from Costco, I use every single one.
I use my laundry baskets, but I need every basket possible to keep the harvest coming.
It's nuts, and sometimes it's cute, and sometimes it's just total utilitarian we are gonna get through this, just like my jumpsuit.
