About the Show
Water is our most abundant resource, but in many places, access to unpolluted freshwater has become a matter of survival.
"Water for Life" follows three environmental defenders in Chile, Honduras, and El Salvador who stand up to mining companies, hydroelectric dam builders, even their own governments, when proposed development projects threaten the rivers that their communities depend on. The film is a story of courage and determination, betrayal and corruption, death threats and murder, as well as unexpected victories in the countryside and in the courts.
The three individuals at the heart of the story are Alberto Curamil, an Indigenous Mapuche leader in Chile; Berta Cáceres, a leader of the Indigenous Lenca people in Honduras; and Francisco Pineda, a subsistence farmer in El Salvador. When foreign corporations and government officials show up in their communities seeking access to local water, they promise jobs and economic development. But these three leaders quickly realize that what will come with the proposed development is contaminated water, environmental devastation, and an existential threat to their way of life.
Beautifully filmed over the course of 11 years, "Water for Life" is an intimate portrait of three courageous people who face dramatic confrontations and heartbreaking consequences while defending their most precious resource. It’s also a story that asks viewers to consider what they would do to protect the water that we all rely on to survive. Narrated by Diego Luna with the original song Ko (Water) sung by Lila Downs and Daniela Millaleo.
